The Search for New Phosphors and Wide Bandgap Semiconductors

Abstract: In this talk I will discuss our efforts to discover new wide bandgap materials that possess favorable optical properties. The first half of the talk will focus on metal halides with perovskite or perovskite-related structures that emit various colors of visible light, without the incorporation of rare-earth ions. The incorporation of Mn2+ as an activator results in bright red emission, when coupled with a suitable sensitizer. The incorporation of Sb3+ leads to emission wavelengths ranging from blue to green to red, depending on the local environment of the Sb3+ ion. The second half of the talk focuses on mixed anion compounds, either oxide fluoride or nitride fluoride, that have wide band gaps and disperse conduction bands that are well suited for application as transparent conductors and photocatalysts.
Biosketch: Patrick Woodward received BS degrees in Chemistry and General Engineering from Idaho State University in 1991, an MS degree in Materials Science and a PhD in Chemistry from Oregon State University in 1996, where he studied under Professor Arthur Sleight. He was a postdoc in the Physics Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (1996−1998) before joining the faculty at Ohio State University in 1998, where he currently is the Newman Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He has served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Solid State Chemistry (2006-2011) and Vice President of the Neutron Scattering Society of American (2014-2018). He has been recognized as an NSF Career Fellow (2001), an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow (2004), a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (2020) and held visiting faculty positions at the University of Bordeaux (2005), University of Sydney (2007), Durham University (2017-2018), and Kyoto University (2025). He is co-author of two widely used textbooks, Chemistry: The Central Science and Solid State Materials Chemistry.
